LifeNotes Edutainment: Self-Esteem, Character, Respect and Safety for Children

Mission Statement: a child-enrichment program empowering children to make smart choices in challenging situations by teaching life-skills, character and safety, using music and dance.

A program for elementary grade children

Introduction

LifeNotes Edutainment (LNE) addresses important topics such as bullying and healthy eating in an educational program that uses music and song (auditory) and dance/performance routines (visual/physical), and interactive participation (arts and crafts) to inform and educate elementary school-age children and their families about life-skills, character-building and safety issues. Through a series of lessons involving interactive participation, arts and crafts and music, song and dance, the LifeNotes program is designed to empower young children in making smart choices in challenging circumstances.

Each lesson is based upon a topical song composed, recorded, choreographed, and performed by the LNE vocal group, with the assistance of Los Angeles based professionals in the music industry.

LifeNotes Edutainment Founder/Director Jacquie Sullivan began her career in the music industry after studying classical piano at USC. Her career as a singer includes radio and television commercials, solo artist, recording and performing with Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Cat Stevens, Michael Bolton, Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music, and Olivia Newton-John, among others. For a period of time, she taught Pop Performance classes at Citrus College in Glendora. She is an active composer, arranger and producer, as well as an instructor. Inspired by her concern for the vulnerabilities of children and her belief in the ability of music to teach, Jacquie began writing and recording songs about safety, and the concept of LifeNotes Edutainment was born.

Program History

The LNE program began in 2002 when Los Angeles-based Founder/Director Jacquie Sullivan, deeply concerned about the abduction of 4-year old Samantha Runnion, felt a need to contribute her skills and expertise to teaching safety principles to young children. She composed and recorded the first CD “Stand Up for Safety” using talented young singers from local colleges. The group soon had performed at many schools and community events.

When she met Sara Dave, a teacher in the community, they decided to develop a Standards of Learning-based curriculum using the songs. In the spring of 2011, the program was presented to 2nd grade students at Cleveland Elementary and Kinder and 1st grade students at Hamilton Elementary Schools in Pasadena, CA.

Song topics and related curriculum quickly evolved beyond safety, to character-building and life-skills; the new songs and curriculum continue to receive enthusiastic response from students, teachers and parents. The program was presented for a second season, during the 2011-2012 winter semester, to 2nd and 3rd grade students at Hamilton Elementary School. Recent assemblies have been presented in Pasadena at Daniel Webster, Loma Alta and Madison Elementary Schools, Pasadena Police and Fire Dept events and other community events.
